Canarian Economy Papers Nº4

Economic convergence between islands

With the preparation of this work, Corporación 5 has the aim to analyze how the process of convergence or divergence experienced between the different Canary Islands has been.

Its scope is limited exclusively to the diagnostic work, without the search for causes or the contribution of solutions or policies to be implemented being part of its objective.

CONCLUSIONS I

  • The islands with the lowest income per inhabitant in the year 2000 have grown more than those with the highest income initial per capita, which means that the differences between islands have been reduced in the period analyzed (2000-2014).
  • They are observed three behavioral patterns: that of the capital, eastern and western islands. These patterns explain why there has been a process of convergence between islands in the period analyzed (2000-2014).
  • The process of convergence in GVA per capita between islands has been more pronounced between 2000 and 2010, and since 2010, a slight trend towards divergence in per capita income has been observed.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • The best evolution of GVA per inhabitant of the minor islands is explained by good performance of its GVA, as well as the lower dynamism of its population, except in El Hierro, where the population has grown more than the Canary Islands average and whose GVA has grown more than on any other island.
  • The eastern islands have presented a less dynamism in terms of GVA per inhabitant, not because their GVA has grown little, but because the population of these islands has behaved much more dynamically than in the rest of the Canary Islands. Therefore, they have not been able to convert population growth into value.
  • The most dynamic islands in terms of income per inhabitant are those in which tourism has more weight on total employment: Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
The importance of tourism in total employment in La Gomera can be an important development factor.
