Canary Islands Register Increase in Active Population During First Quarter of 2024

The data is positive, but there is still a way to go to reach the national average

The Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) released data from the Registered Labor Force Survey (EPA) for the first quarter of 2024, showing a 1% increase in the active population in the Canary Islands compared to the previous quarter.

In total, the active population in the Canaries stands at 1,099,243 people, of whom 933,982 are employed and 165,261 are unemployed.

The active population in the Canary Islands is in a favorable situation, with an increase in the employed population and a decrease in unemployment.

However, the unemployment rate remains higher than the national average, so it is necessary to continue with employment policies to reduce it.

Here are some of the highlights of the EPA for the first quarter of 2024:

  • By sex:
    • Men: 561,397 active people (51.1%)
    • Women: 537,846 active people (48.9%)
  • By age:
    • 16 to 24 years old: 72,093 active people (6.5%)
    • 25 to 34 years old: 203,569 active people (18.6%)
    • 35 to 44 years old: 259,191 active people (23.6%)
    • 45 to 54 years old: 314,638 active people (28.7%)
    • 55 years old or older: 249,752 active people (22.7%)

In general, the data from the EPA for the first quarter of 2024 are positive and show a gradual recovery of the Canary Islands labor market.

This trend is expected to continue in the coming quarters, thanks to the improvement in economic activity and the implementation of employment policies by the Canary Islands Government.
