Unemployment in the Canary Islands rises in April, but remains below 2023 levels

The unemployment rate slightly increases in April

The Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) released unemployment data for the Canary Islands for April 2024. The figures show a slight increase in unemployment compared to the previous month, with 2,424 more people unemployed, bringing the total number to 167,468.

Despite this small uptick, the comparison with the same month last year shows positive data. In April 2023, the unemployment figure was 179,692 people, which means that unemployment has fallen by 12,224 people in the last year, with an annual variation rate of -6.8%.

Breakdown by sex, age groups and islands

The analysis by sex reveals that unemployment has increased for both men and women in April, with a variation rate of around 1.5% in both cases.

As for age groups, the positive note is for those under 25, where unemployment has decreased by around 6%. However, slight increases have occurred in the rest of the age groups.

By islands, unemployment has risen in all but La Gomera, where it has fallen by 2%. The largest percentage change has occurred in La Palma, with an increase of 4.1%.

Economic sectors

By economic sectors, registered unemployment has remained stable in agriculture and has risen slightly (less than 1%) in industry and construction. In the services sector, registered unemployment rose by 1.9%, with the hospitality sector contributing most to this increase.

People looking for their first job

The group of people looking for their first job maintained similar figures to those of March.
