Canary Islands Unemployment Drops for Third Consecutive Month
Registered unemployment in the Canary Islands stood at 165,044 people in March 2024, after a decrease of 4,686 people compared to the previous month, according to data published by the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (ISTAC).
This figure represents the third consecutive monthly decrease in unemployment in the islands, and the lowest since April 2008. Compared to the same month last year, unemployment decreased by 18,347 people, representing an annual variation rate of -10%.
Breakdown by Sex and Age Group
Unemployment decreased more for women than for men, with a monthly variation rate of -3.1% compared to -2.3%. By age group, unemployment figures decreased in all groups except for the under-20 age group, where it increased by 8.5%.
Decrease in All Islands
Registered unemployment decreased in all islands except El Hierro, where figures remained similar to the previous month. The largest percentage changes occurred in Fuerteventura and La Gomera, both islands with a rate of -4.4%.
Decrease in All Economic Sectors
Registered unemployment decreased in all economic sectors, with the variation rate in agriculture being -3%, in industry -4.2%, in construction -1.6% and in services -3.1%. The group of people looking for their first job remained at similar levels to February.
Positive Assessment
The Canary Islands Government has positively valued this data, which confirms the downward trend in unemployment in the islands. The Minister of Employment, Social Policies and Housing, Cristina Valido, has highlighted that “we are on the right track”, and has announced that the Government will continue working to create jobs and improve the living conditions of the Canarian people.
