In 2023, 6.8% of the EU population faced severe material and social deprivation.
Among EU countries, the rates of severe material and social deprivation vary widely. Romania recorded the highest rate at 19.8 per cent, followed by Bulgaria (18.0 per cent), Greece (13.5 per cent), Hungary (10.4 per cent) and Spain (9.0 per cent).
In contrast, Slovenia (2.0%), Cyprus (2.4%), Sweden, Luxembourg and Estonia (all 2.5%) had the lowest rates.
In 2023, 6.8% of the EU population was facing severe material and social deprivation. This proportion increased slightly compared to 2022 (6.7%).
