Change in household income over the last 12 months
This article concludes a series of Statistics Explained publications focusing on the quarterly collection of data on living conditions (QLC) in the European Union. This quarterly data collection programme was implemented with the aim of providing a more detailed picture of how citizens’ living conditions have evolved throughout the COVID-19 outbreak and during the recovery period.
In 2023, the economic situation of households in Europe has varied significantly between countries according to Eurostat data:
Italy: Stability prevailing with 76.1% of the population maintaining their income, 20.3% experiencing increases and only 3.6% seeing decreases.
Bulgaria: 18.7% reported increases, 65.9% maintained their income stable, and 15.4% experienced decreases.
Austria: 64.3% of the population kept their income unchanged, while 14.7% saw increases and 21.0% experienced decreases.
Belgium: 17.6% reported increases, 60.8% had no change, and 21.6% saw decreases.
France: The majority (73.6%) kept their income stable, 12.0% saw increases and 14.4% saw decreases.
Finland: Stands out with 25.7% of the population seeing increases, 62.3% unchanged and 12.0% seeing decreases.
Slovakia: 23.1% reported increases, 63.4% maintained their income and 13.5% experienced decreases.
