Hugo León, a native of Tenerife, will be the sole representative from the Canary Islands at the 10th U23 Trinquete World Championship, to be held from September 14 to 20 in Venado Tuerto, Santa Fe province (Argentina). This young pelotari has been called up by the Spanish national team to compete in the Men’s Rubber-Palette discipline, one of the highlight events of the tournament. He will join teammates Carlos Carmona, Markel Mendigutxía, and Nacho Pacheco, under the guidance of national coach Andrés Rabas.
Hugo’s presence at this championship marks a milestone for Canarian pelota, as he becomes the only player from the Archipelago to secure a spot on the squad. His participation not only underscores the sporting talent nurtured in Tenerife but also shines a light on the international projection of Canarian athletes in disciplines that may be less mainstream but are deeply rooted in tradition, such as pelota.
In addition to his competition in Argentina, Hugo León has also been preselected for the Nations League, scheduled for October in Mexico City. This double call-up to top-level tournaments highlights the confidence placed in him and confirms his growing presence on the international stage.
In an interview with Buenos Días Canarias, broadcast on Televisión Canaria, Hugo shared his thoughts on this important challenge, expressing his excitement, commitment, and pride in representing both Spain and the Canary Islands on such a prestigious sporting platform.
