Retail activity in the Canary Islands continues to show strong performance. In February 2025, the annual variation rate of the general retail trade index at constant prices — that is, excluding the effect of price changes — stood provisionally at 2.2%, well above the national average of 0.8%. This places the Canary Islands in third position nationally, behind only the Basque Country (2.9%) and Murcia (2.8%).
By sector, sales in food increased by 1.2%, while non-food sales grew by an impressive 4.6% in the region.
Beyond sales figures, the Canary Islands stood out in terms of employment. Over the past twelve months, retail employment in the region rose by 3.6%, making it the highest growth rate among all autonomous communities and cities in Spain. Nationally, retail employment grew by 1.3%.
The Balearic Islands (3.4%) and Navarre (2.4%) followed the Canary Islands in employment growth, while the lowest rates were recorded in Ceuta (-0.7%), Asturias (-0.6%), and Extremadura (-0.1%).
These figures highlight the strength of the retail sector in the Canary Islands, driven by both increased consumer activity and job creation, positioning the region as one of the most dynamic in Spain.
