Retail trade in the Canary Islands continues to show positive signs. In March 2025, the annual rate of change of the general retail trade index at constant prices – that is, without taking inflation into account – was provisionally at 3.9%, above the national average, which was 3.7%.
With this result, the Canary Islands are positioned in the NINETH position within the national ranking of autonomous communities. The largest increases were recorded in the Basque Country (6.8%), Madrid (6.4%) and Murcia (5.9%). At the opposite extreme, Asturias (-0.5%), Extremadura (0.0%) and the Balearic Islands (1.4%) presented the smallest variations.
In the case of the Canary Islands, the growth was especially notable in the groups of feeding, with an increase of 5.3%, and in the rest of products, with an increase of 4.2%.
Furthermore, employment in the Canary Islands retail trade has experienced a increase of 2.6% in the last twelve months, positioning itself as the second community with the greatest growth in occupancy in the sector. Only Navarra, with 2.8%, exceeds this figure, while the Balearic Islands and Castilla–La Mancha tie for third place with 2.5%. In contrast, the communities with the least variation were Asturias (-0.4%), Extremadura (-0.3%), Ceuta (0.0%) and Melilla (0.0%).
These data reflect the good health of retail trade in the archipelago, both in terms of sales and employment, consolidating its role as a regional economic engine.
