In July 2024 the euro area’s current account balance recorded a surplus of €40 billion, down from €51 billion in the previous month. Over the past 12 months, the cumulative surplus amounted to €388 billion (2.6 % of GDP), compared with €71 billion (0.5 %) a year earlier.
On the financial account, euro area residents made net purchases of portfolio investment securities from outside the euro area of €477 billion in the same period, while non-residents purchased €642 billion of euro area investment securities.
